A selection of photographs of the Sera Driver Development squad and the drivers who have come through it. The team runs at the Australian Kart Championship, at state rounds, and at selected meetings in New Zealand and the USA.

How a national round runs

A round of the Australian Kart Championship takes a full weekend. Practice, then qualifying, then heats, then a final. Between each of those sessions there is tyre pressure to reset, gearing to reconsider, chassis adjustments to make and video to review, and for a young driver most of the learning happens in those gaps rather than out on the circuit. That is the part of a race weekend a coach is there for.

The number 96 appears on several of the karts. That was David Sera's own competition number through most of his career, and it has carried across onto the squad's equipment.

Australian karting is graded by age and engine, so a single meeting will have Cadets in their first seasons running alongside Juniors and Seniors, often on the same circuit within an hour of each other. The squad enters drivers across those grades, which is why the faces in these photographs range from primary school age through to drivers already being watched by car racing teams. The equipment scales with them, but the fundamentals being coached do not change much from one class to the next.

The wider squad

Since 2019 the team has worked alongside Penrite Racing and Erebus Motorsport, whose staff attend selected rounds to assist, which is why Erebus branding appears on the team shirts in some of these images. The background to that arrangement, and the drivers who have moved from these karts into cars, is set out on the race team page.
